Thoroughbred® Announces
TS ODBC R/W DataServer
March 14, 2001
Somerset, New Jersey
Thoroughbred announced today the immediate availability of it's TS ODBC R/W DataServer (Read/Write) and TS ODBC DataServer (Read Only), version 4.1.0. The new version 4.1.0 incorporates numerous updates and features including database login security for both the Read, and Read/Write versions.
The TS ODBC R/W DataServer will allow users to write data from ODBC compliant programs such as spreadsheets, databases and word processors to Thoroughbred databases. The Thoroughbred data files will need to be "exposed" to the ODBC interface as in the current TS ODBC DataServer (Read Only) version. This will require that the Thoroughbred files or tables to be exposed be defined in the Link and Format dictionaries of
Dictionary-IV.
Data security is paramount, and the rules defined in the Format Dictionary can play a key role in determining that the data being written into the database conforms to those rules. As such, database security has been extended to include: Logins, Table, Row and Column security. Added security is available in 8.4.2 Dictionary-IV which is included with all 8.4.2 Thoroughbred Environments including: OPENworkshop®, IDOL-IV® and Thoroughbred Basic and should be implemented to assure the safety and integrity of your database. Attached to this announcement is a copy of the TS ODBC DataServer Security Overview.
Current TS ODBC DataServer (Read Only) installs will have to be upgraded to support the Write capability. Security will need to be implemented to define the Write-enabled users vs. the Read only users. This upgrade will be done under Thoroughbred's standard Maintenance and Trade-In programs.
